Speed-Dating the Home Office: One Mans Bureaucratic Odyssey
Ever tried speed-dating? I missed it in my twenties—too square, apparently. Now, in a spasm of late-forties angst, Ive spent hours calling total strangers, trying to make them like me. I didnt ever think Id end up here. Didnt think the wife would approve—or that would-be girl, for that matter. Im a bit out of practice, and out of shape, lets face it. But after this week, like a 49-year-old virgin on a first date, Ive become something of a silver-tongued suitor.
Just not on the right people.
Im told girls love questions. It shows you care. But Ive discovered that civil servants on the end of a phone dont. Even if theyre called Shahida.
The Share Code Conundrum
My wife Tetiana needed a share code. Its an electronic ID—a random mix of numbers and letters the government gives you if youre not a citizen so you can work, rent, or, in our case, get a mortgage. They should just tattoo it on your arm when you first arrive at Dover. Theres an idea, Nigel.
Tetiana has been in the country since 2009. She has Indefinite Leave to Remain, stamped in her passport—two passports ago. Shes allowed in, even though in her fur coat she looks like a Romanian people smuggler. She can be let loose on a mental health clinic but she cant vote. Then three months into the remortgaging process, our mortgage advisor suddenly tells us they dont accept paper visas. Although they did five years ago. You need a share code.
How do you get a share code? First, you set up a UKVI—UK Visas and Immigration—online account. Then they make you shlep all the way to Croydon to give your biometrics. Its deliberate. If the office was in Hove, no one would ever leave the country. But who would want to stay in the UK after going to Croydon? In reality, most people who go to Croydon for a visa never actually leave. Because, trouble is, once Rick Deckard has bagged up your blood, hair, toenail clippings, and fingerprints, youre in no fit state to go anywhere else.
So thats Croydon. And then you wait. And wait.
The August Dead Zone
Now a mortgage has a deadline. If you think youre clobbered by your interest rate now, wait till you go on the standard variable rate. We had until September 23. Where was our share code? Silly me. Whos going to catch any Home Office civil servant worth their salt working in August? Or even in England. I star ted to look up by-elections in Scotland to help make ends meet.
So, deep breath, we decide to phone UKVI. This is where speed-dating skills come in handy. If Ovid was alive today, he wouldnt write about the Minotaur—that horned cow at the centre of a labyrinth. No. Hed write about UKVI phone options. Because before you get to impress anyone with your wit, you need to press number 4. Then number 2. Then number 4. Then number 4 again. Then number 2. There are more numbers called out than during a night at Mecca bingo.
Advisors are more protected from foreign reach than our gold bullion under Threadneedle Street. It wouldnt be so bad if it wasnt a different advisor each time. “Calls may be recorded for training and data protection purposes.” Not to actually relieve you from having to tell them your problem all over again each time. And thats before youve got past security. How long is your inside leg? Whats your cats middle name?
The Human Touch
Someone suddenly speaks: “How can I help you?” Can I remember how to speak English? “My wife needs a share code.” I hope he can smell my aftershave. Can pheromones travel down the phone line? “Have you got a UKVI account?” “Yes.” “Hang on a minute.”
Something in his voice told me this potential lover would never find my wifes electronic data. My wife and I decide to tag team. The music stops and its time to move on. By the end of the night, no ones marked my score card. Not even the wife. All I can say is Tetiana must have more experience kissing frogs than me.
However she wooed him, it worked. She probably chanced upon someone on day release from some luxury hotel that provides all-day breakfast. With the speed and grace of a concierge at the Ritz, it took this marvel of productivity fewer than five minutes to fix my wifes share code.
You can order swarms of bees on Amazon but if the state loses your data, its like looking for a yellow Lego brick in a childrens sand pit. Pity help us when the replicants take over.
The Practical Takeaway
If youre navigating the UKVI system, heres what I learned: persistence pays, but so does timing. Avoid August if you can. Set up your UKVI account early. And when you call, have every document and detail at your fingertips. The system is designed to test your patience, but its not impossible to beat. Just dont expect romance.
